As an experienced (and learning) backyard gardener, I've created this channel as a way to share what I've learned over the past 10 years. I grow mostly the typical fruits and vegetables like tomatoes, squash, peppers and melons. Being located in the southern California high desert, I face many challenges in having a home garden, but many of the tips I share can be applied wherever you are to help you with those same struggles in your garden.
You can expect videos on a variety of gardening topics, geared toward the beginner gardener. Drip irrigation, starting seeds, planting, composting, raised gardens, shade covers and wind breaks are just some of the topics I will cover. I try to keep my videos simple and straight-forward so that they will be helpful without over complicating things.
My goal is to help beginner gardeners be more successful when planting and growing a backyard garden.

Thanks for this video. I too, recently received an AeroGarden as a gift and was clueless on how to proceed. I do have a question however. I’ve noticed that the root structure on all of my herbs seem to be quite full and thick. Should I consider removing the herbs from the Aero garden and planting them in a separate pot or is this something that I shouldn’t worry about? Thanks for all of your help!
It's really up to you. You can definitely transplant to soil if you want, but you don't have to, they should continue to grow fine in the aerogarden. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
@@InTheGarden Gotcha!! Thanks so much! I’m sure I’ll be bothering you again for more advice real soon!😀
Great video. I don't know why youtubers think they need music on their videos.
I have no females on 10 plants.
Typically the first set of flowers will all be male, you should see female flowers in the the 2nd and 3rd sets.
Hi...Do you always have 0.5inch-1inch of water in the bottom of the trays, or do you wait for the water to be all absorbed and then top up?
Once the seeds have sprouted, I wait until the tray is dry AND the top 1/4 to 1/2in of soil is dry.
@@InTheGarden So you do not add more water to the tray (other than the initial amount) until they have sprouted?....I have been maintaining the water all the time, even before they have sprouted...Could this much moisture kill the seeds?
@@InTheGarden Please confirm the answer to my follow-up question as soon as you get the chance, because the answer may help me to not have to give up on my growing attempts for the season, because the seedling hiccups have caused delays and I am sat twiddling my thumbs as to whether the improper watering may be the cause...
I usually don't add additional water until they have sprouted, but I don't think it would cause any issues. The seeds are at the tops of the cups and the soil will only draw up the amount of water it can hold so the amount in the tray shouldn't make a difference. I would only be concerned they haven't sprouted if it's been much longer than the germination time listed on the packets and the temperature has been kept in the correct range the whole time. Hope this helps.
@@InTheGarden Thanks!
Thanks
Love no noise, thanks
Explained very well. 👍
Thank you, very informative and straight to the points!
Please share the links and cost
I wonder if you can get these blocks in Australia... they dont sell them at Bunnings sadly
Thank you, this is so helpful!
That’s pretty cool, thank you.
Thank you very much for this video. I was so overwhelmed by setting up an irrigation system, but this helped me visualize it and understand it better. Now the task doesn't seem so daunting and I'm actually excited to get my system set up.
Hi great video. It answered several of my questions. One question I have however is why does my 1/2GPH button emitter flow at a medium-fast rate rather than drip? Thanks for the great information and help
Great video with no useless fluff, thanks! I have recently become the ignorant caretaker of a 5 acre irrigation system with 3 Irritrol irrigation timers, hundreds of fruit trees, ornamental trees and bushes and dozens of small succlents, etc. It has been somewhat neglected since the last irrigation overhaul 2 years ago and i am just now learning about irrigation systems. (i am the renter). The property has Netafim drip emitters everywhere. The soil is clay to loam. Most of the irrigation stations are set for 20 to 30 minutes each. All of the emitters i have seen are either 8 L/hr or 4 L/hr. Many of the trees (even fully grown redbuds and the fruit trees) have 3 or 4 individual 8L/hr emitters close to the trunks, i.e. 24 to 32 L/hr per tree. Even the little succulents and super drought-tolerants like Dietes have 4L/hr emitters. Most of the programs are set to run 3 or 4 days a week, and this is northern semi-coastal California, so not super hot except a few days/week for a few weeks in summer. So I think this is way too much water, especially for the succulents, drought tolerants and even the trees. At least one lovely full-grown apricot tree died last year, i think from root rot. Grass and weed growth, including blackberries & poison oak is pretty extreme around the watering. And when the weed-whacking guys come, drip lines ususally get cut. I think this is too much water, especially for the succulents, drought tolerants and trees. What do you think?
Thank you very much for this video. You are a life safer
What size soaker hose are installing with the drip connections?
The soaker hose in this video is 1/4in. Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
I have watched a few videos now and I'm wondering why people are not talking about how rain barrels are better for your garden that water does not have all the chemicals added to it rain is pure and city water is full of chemicals like chlorine and stuff I guess your drip system is better for bushes and trees, I guess. let me know. Why don't people want to use rain barrels? for their garden really like how the drip system works though.
I can't speak for anyone else, but where I live, we only get about 4in of rain a year, and it's almost entirely during the winter months so using rain barrels is not a viable option for me to regularly water my garden during the growing season. I don't discuss it, because my videos are all based on my personal experience while gardening. Additionally, the cost to set up a rain collection system with pumps to feed a drip system are not typically economical for backyard gardeners. Hope this helps, thanks for watching 😊 🌱
hello I'm just watching your video and I see the netting could you tell me what that is used for is it so the plants don't get wind burnt ?
I use the netting, which is just Shade cloth, for 2 things. To shade the plants during the summer when it gets over 100° and also to help protect them from the wind which gusts here regularly 30-40mph in the afternoons. Hope this helps, thanks for watching 😊 🌱
Such good info.
Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
Great!!! Nice detail and explanation for beginners or those who need a quick refresher. Much Appreciated, Amanda Swiderek
Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
Is there only one size of the smaller tube for the drip piece?
Yes, the standard size is 1/4in. They may make other sizes, but that's the one you are likely to find at most stores. Hope this helps, thanks for watching 😊 🌱
Thanks for posting. Fingers crossed it works for me.
I also had a plant break right at the ground last Monday, it's just now (saturday) starting to grow new roots. This method isn't 100%, but it does usually work well. Hope yours recovers. Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
great video.
Does the drip hose only come in 1/2 and 5/8 inch diameter sizes?? I purchased couplers for 1/2, 5/8 and universal sizes but none of them fit.
The common sizes from places like home improvement stores are 3/8, 1/2 and 5/8. But there are other sizes as well. The size should be printed on the side of the tubing. It may be hard to read, and/or in decimal format rather than a fraction.
Thanks for the video. This is the best one I've seen so far and I've seen a bit lol very informative and pretty much a one stop video. Thanks. Not I can rest easy on my three week vacation knowing my food supply will be watered.
These walls will bow. Need pictures?
Eventually they will. Mine is now 2 years old and some of the boards have started warping a small amount. But no bowing, and no major damage. It's in great shape so far. Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
Great explanation. Clear and to the point.
Aho! Only thing that’s throwing me off about this guy is he never blinks😂
Yeah, sorry about that! 😂 sometimes when I'm focused on looking at the camera I go while between blinks. I'm getting better though as I do more videos 😂😂 Thanks for watching, I hope you still enjoyed the video.
Why the plastic? That's a waste to me. All your doing is preventing worms from getting in your bed , which are very beneficial. The plastic is just going to rot away anyways. Other than that it's an awesome bed guys 💪🏻
We only put it on the sides, to keep some of the moisture from the soil from being in constant contact with the wood, not on the bottom. But you are right, it does break apart quickly anyways, so next time I would probably skip it. Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
@@InTheGarden heck yeah that's actually a good idea. That's how the no till pots are now. Fabric pots with a layer of plastic on the inside but not all the way down so there's drainage.
Is it possible to Save it when its still small and the main stamp was broken but the side small one is saved?
Show us the components instead of talking so much.
In this video I was really focusing on some questions I get often. I do have another video where I show all the parts, how to connect them and explain them in depth: ua-cam.com/video/MQNdGFI9wiQ/v-deo.html Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
Background music is distracting. I am here to listen to you and learn. You have a lovely voice, no need for enhancements. Thank you for the information.
Which part of the high desert are you?
I'm in Victorville, CA 🙂
@InTheGarden perfect! Ima sub. Nice to actually see gardening from a semi local area. (Newberry Springs)
The red Orbit hole puncher breaks all the time.
Sorry to hear that. I've been using mine for many years and haven't had any issues. It's definitely my favorite punch tool.
Really surprised that you are using so much plastic.
The plastic works well because it is reusable. I will use the same cups for at least 4 or 5 seasons. It's no more plastic than you get buying plants from a local nursery, but it is all used multiple times before being thrown out. Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
very useful info
Thanks for watching 😊 🌱
What about a back flow preventer/anti siphon valve?
Yes, I didn't include it, or mention it in the video because my house already has them installed on all outside faucets and so I didn't think to discuss it. But yes, you should definitely consider using a back flow prevention valve as part of this setup. Hope this helps, thanks for watching.
If I put them in my garage but there's still a chance for freeze should I keep them inside? When I say freeze, we have a few days this coming week that are 28 and 31 degrees. I plan to put an led light above them. Any help would be appreciated friend. Thank you! Your videos are very informative!
Daily drip irrigation will keep the water from getting stagnant. Sadly, where we live, we're on outdoor watering restrictions once a week (our assigned day is Saturday). So, we can't use this idea to keep the water fresh on a daily basis.
love your videos: Can I put a water filter system on a Irrigation system for my raised beds
Thank you for the video. This is an extremely thorough and comprehensive how too video.
Glad it was helpful, thanks for watching 😊 🌱
Do you have tips on how to harden off veggie plants that were grown from seed indoors?
I have a whole video discussing that. It's one of my first videos I made so it's a little rough, but the info is good. ua-cam.com/video/60NdtSkOSkc/v-deo.html Hope this helps, thanks for watching 😊 🌱
the background music makes it difficult to concentrate on your message which is very informative. The music becomes noise and just is not neccesary. I would just like to hear what you have to say without the noise.
question not on the 8 -- how long can one 1/2" tubing run be? I've heard 200' max. I want to go 450'
3/4" will be better, that one can go 450 feet
Around 200-250 would be the max for 1/2in tubing.
I went 6x8
